Digital photography in Mongolia

Back in UB for an eventful couple of days.

Here are some favorite photos from Jonna's time in Mongolia:

1) The post-election riots in UB were international news. Some students from our program stumbled upon the upheaval. I visited the destroyed building the next morning. UB residents were protesting the results of an election and targeted the headquarters of the former communist party. Rioters also destroyed and looted the national art museum.

2) Another view of the riot damage. This building was about three blocks from our hotel.

Red splash, burned window.
Embarrassed Mongolia.
Riot fires burned.

3) UB was put under martial law after the riots. There were strict curfews and no one could purchase gas or alcohol for about a week.

4) Old and new architecture. The Choijin Lama Monastery from the early 1900s sits at the base of a new, shiny, wing-shaped sky scraper.

5) Three dimesional décor at the Choijin Lama Monastery.

6) Hell realm fresco at the Choijin Lama Monastery. This shrine room an a large emphasis on the Buddhist hell realms with paintings and statues.

7) Protector mask at the Choijin Lama Monastery.

8) Simple yet elegant statue at the Choijin Lama Monastery.

9) I took advantage of cheap foot massages about 4 times while in UB. Small women with strong hands could make you cry (in a good way) by pressing into your feet.

Flannel pajamas.
Traps and arches broken glass.
Small woman, strong hands.
