Warm winter memories (Jan 20, 1999).

Those sublime moments that make up the perfect life.

Like Pearl's

Tonight
the sky was especially clear
and the stars glowed
in the black sky
and fell to gather at our feet
with snow clouds still two hours away
the music was just right
as we danced and told stories
and laughed deep into the night
as the coals flared
dancing with the winds
and I fell asleep smiling

our fresh water pearls
irregular perfect treasures
collected throughout a lifetime
maybe one each day
hopefully some each week
carried along forever
held close to the heart
like Grandma's tattered paper sack
rattled periodically
in remembrance
rattled methodically
in self-assurance
gathered in
certain moments
certain situations
and certain circumstances
no perfect world
or perfect life
just imperfect puzzle pieces

Tonight
alone on the couch
I can remember
the bitterness in the wine
and the sweetness in the night air
and the friendships of the moment
that will last a lifetime
