My personal favorite movie is _The Lion's Roar_, about the life and death of the 16th Karmapa. Another great one is _The Reincarnation of Kensur Rinpoche_, about a monk's search for his teacher. I also recommend _Ocean of Wisdom_, about the Dalai Lama, and _Lord of the Dance/Destroyer of Illusion_, about the Mani Rimdu festival. If you want more info on where to purchase various movies on Tibet, you might contact the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of Virginia, which has a great collection (I think the number is 804-924-8815). Hope this helps. The film-makers appeared to know little about Tibet, but the end-product is still reasonably sympathetic. McLennan) Subject: New Videos About Tibetans "The Message of the Tibetans" Further to the discussion of films about Tibetans, two television programs about Tibetans living in exile made for French TV by Arnaud Desjardins have recently become available in video. They were filmed in 1963 in India, Sikkim and Bhutan with the support of H.H. the Dalai Lama and contain footage of major Tibetan teachers from all lineages including H.H. Dalai Lama, H.H. Karmapa, H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, H.H. Sakya Tridzin Rinpoche, Chatral Rinpoche, Abo Rinpoche and many others (including a very young Tai Situ Rinpoche.) The narration, which is in English, is suprisingly good. There are undoubtably some technical errors in regards to the various pujas shown in the films but overall Desjardins seems to have had a sympathetic and accurate sense of what Tibetan dharma is about. The commentary reflects the issues that faced the Tibetans at that early stage of their exile so at times it takes a slightly pessimistic view of the chances of survival of Tibetan culture and dharma which, fortunately has subsequently been proven unfounded. The films are in colour and the quality of the videos are good. Each video is 52 minutes in length. I highly recommend them to anyone. P.S. - Apparently there will be two more of Desjardin's films released on video in the next year or two: "The Lake of Yogis" which is about the yogis living at Tso Pema (Rewalsar) in North India, and "Children of Wisdom" which was shot mainly at Rumtek, H.H. Karmapa's monastery in Sikkim. The videos can be ordered from: Alize Diffusion 02-3330 avenue Dumas Quebec, QC G1L 4S5 Canada Tel: (418)623-7524 Fax: (418)623-0132 The videos are called 1)BUDDHISM and 2)TANTRISM. The titles don't really indicate the subject matter of the films, however, as both films are about the various aspects of Tibetan dharma as it was (and is) being practiced in the Tibetan communities of the Himalayas. And their dreamlike effect is enhanced by an ethereal soundtrack of tinckling bells, gongs, synthesisers and unearthly voices." (John Wrathall, The Good Times, London). The Reincarnation of Khensur Rinpoche This film is a "two-part real life drama...narrated by Ian Holm and shows events as they happened. Once found, the child, a cheerily boiterious, very normal infant only four years old, is ceremonially initiated into the religious life. Once again the Dalai Lama appears, but this time to ambigous eefect. For the way in which a young child is set up in a role likely to last for life will be experienced as wonderful or disturbing depending on he religious outlook of the individual viewer. Either way, this is a fascinating insight and a film of great interest". (Michael Darviell, What's On in London, London) Directed by Tenzin Sonam and Ritu Sarin. 65 min. This is a very important source which I hope people will add to it in order to come as close as possible to a complete list of films on Tibet. here are my additions: "The Peaceful Liberation of Tibet." A Chinese doucmentary with stirring uplifting music and lots of happy natives grateful for Chinese rule. An excellent exaample of terribly unbelievable propaganda. However there is lots of footage from the 1950s, Tibet scholars justifying Chinese rule and the Panchen Lama. 30 mins. No date, English narration. "Masters of the Roof of the World." Much like the film above. This includes Ngabo Ngawang Jigme describing Tibetan feudalism. 30 mins., No date, English narration. "The Tibet Journal." I later found this as a video in the foreign film section of a reputable video store. This Chinese made film almost depicts genuine Tibetan culture I understand. The other film was about a serf being liberated by the People's Army, and I did not see this film. The description of the film in the program also did not mention anything about it being just propaganda. I saw about four Chinese films and only really liked one that was made in either the late fourties or early fifties. -- mike wilson ottawa ontario canada aa793@freenet.carleton.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jul 1994 09:11:30 EDT From: David Jean Schweitzer Subject: Re: Movies I saw the "The Horse Thief" in France some time ago. I am, by far not an expert in Tibetan culture. However it is apparent that this film's director; Tian Zhuang Zhuang went through a great deal of effort to recreate the atmosphere of Pre-Chinese occupation Tibet. Furthermore, he handled the religious scenes sensitively . I liked this film and would recommend "The Horse Thief" to anyone who is interested in Tibetan culture. David Jean Schweitzer artist in residence, filmmaker, SFAC/Alliance for Media Arts ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jul 1994 08:34:19 +0800 From: "Brian C. Shaw, Centre of Asian Studies, HKU" Subject: Re: Movies Although my research area is contemporary (post 1972) Bhutan, I also much appreciate the work done by Sonam Dargay in getting this Tibet movie-FAQ started. I do note, however, that Bhutan is not Tibet, and some items have "strayed" (more on this later) Some comment: (a) Further on "The Horse Thief" (Dao maze): This was shown at the 12th Hong Kong International Film Festival in April 1988. According to the programme notes, it was made in 1986, 35mm, colour, 99 minutes running time. Cast includes: Tseshang Rinzin, Dan Jiji. Commentary (from the Festival brochure): "Shot by a 'fifth generation" filmmaker [director Tian Zhuangzhuang], this controversial film was twice banned [in China] for its depiction of "primitive" rituals and poverty in Tibet, but though re-dated and re-cut, its powers have not been diminished. The tragic hero is Norbu, a herdsman expelled from his clan for stealing. Despite efforts to atone for his crime, his son dies. When his wife gives birth again, Norbu is again forced to steal. This time, he sacrifices himself ... Tian said he made the film for the 21st century, his strong images and minimalist approach to drama are clearly avant-garde. I saw the film and enjoyed its freedom from cant. (b) Another film to be added is: "Pa-dga' Living Buddha" Director: Wen Pulin China 1993 colour video 108 minutes shown at the 18th Hong Kong International Film Festival (April 1994). The blurb reads: "Wen Pulin, a Han Chinese who first visited Tibet in 1989 and started making documentaries about it (including "The sacred site of ascetisism" - about which I don't have the details to hand), has now made Nga-shod his permanent home. Befriending Pa-dga' the Living Buddha, today he even subsumes shooting films to building bridges and temples with Pa-dga'. His latest documentary on Tibet is a record of a devoted man carrying out his daily religious and secular duties, and in an oblique way, an internal odyssey of the filmmaker himself finding tranquility in his adopted homeland. The film, therefore, like its subject, exudes the effortless serenity of a man at home with his calling and the environment." (c) Add further details to "Compassion in exile" (already on the list): made 1992, 16mm colour, 60 minutes running time (according to the blurb on its showing at the 16th Hong Kong International Film Festival). (d) A general comment: It would be helpful to have original (uncut) running times included in the listing. (e) Bhutan is not Tibet; Tibet is not Bhutan. But the listing has two items that are purely about Bhutan. Should they be "allowed" to stay there? Should there be a separate "Bhutan-film/video FAQ"? If so, I'm prepared to start *this* by drawing down several items from the comprehensive Bhutan bibliography that I am completing. Any comments, pro/con? (I'll re-post this last para separately to gain maximum attention from students of Bhutan.) brian c. shaw honorary research fellow centre of Asian studies university of hong kong bcjshaw@hkucc.hku.hk bcjshaw@hk.super.net bcjshaw@iohk.com ------------------------------ End of TIBET-L Digest - 17 Jul 1994 to 18 Jul 1994 **************************************************
