----------- SERIDERS FAQ -------------- Maintainer: Alan Fleming Version: 1.4 Date: 6/19/96 I) MSF ((800)/245-4410) contact info for SE states: a) Georgia: (404)/669-2950 b) North Carolina: (800)/428-RIDE II) recommended roads: 1) Blood Triangle: GA-60/GA-180/US-129 2) FDR Memorial Highway: GA-190 3) Mt. Cheaha: AL-281 4) Blue Ridge Parkway 5) Deal's Gap: US-129/NC-28 6) TN 16 through the Skyline Wildlife Preserve. This is the extension of AL 79, which has some good sections, but the last 10 miles before TN16 are straight and boring. However, in the Skyline preserve, TN16 opens up with very wide berm (good run-offs :) and WFO (125 w/ good lean) sweepers. There are no real side roads and you can see through all the curves, making this a great high speed road. Toward the end, this road comes down off the mountain to Winchester, TN. Avoid this road during deer hunting season, as BDI hunters drive 4 wheelers across the road WFO w/o looking. 7) US64 from Winchester up to Monteagle is very winding and scenic. 8) US64 in NC from Murphy to Franklin is very winding and scenic. There are quite a few side roads until you cross the mountains just before Franklin, where it is good high speed sweepers spoiled only by 18 wheelers and winnebagos. 9) TN 121 to Tim's Ford Dam, thence to Lynchburg is very scenic rural middle TN farm country. Good winding roads. 10) US231 from Fayetteville TN to Shelbyville TN is some great 2 lane fed hwy winding over mountain ridges in scenic middle TN farmland. Follow this on to Murfreesboro and Sloan's Honda. 11) TN 56 from Tracy City (near Monteagle) to McMinnville is great. Make sure to go on north of McMinnville to see Rock Island St. Rustic Pk. 12) We took TN 56 back to Winchester, TN is was great, but better was TN56 going down the mountain just before we got to Monteagle, TN. This road drops 800-1K feet in 6-8 miles of really awesome twisties that remind me of GA-60 without so much traffic :) This is a short stretch of road, but well worth going 50-100 miles for (or out of your way for on a trip). From McMinnville, slip through Bone Cave, TN and get on TN 30. This 13) goes east to the Appalachian Mtns, crossing several plateaus and valleys, inc. the Cumberland Plateau. Just past Dayton, TN you must ride a ferry across the TN river to stay on this road. The price is $2 for cars, $1 for bikes. 14) If you take the BRP from Cherokee/Bryson City area to Lake Junaluska, there are four tunnels (there are no lights and they curve so the end is not visible from the beginning. Suddenly you're plunged into darkness with the road nipples and the side markers your only visual stimulus. Eerie.) 15) NC 209 from Lake Junaluska to Hot Springs is _very_ nice winding, at times very twisty back roads through mountains and valleys, along the French Broad River. Hot Springs is an old resort, the hot springs now feed hot tubs that you can rent by the hour -- just across the road from camping right on the French Broad River. 16) Here's a nice warm up for Deals Gap. Start at SC 28 at Walhalla SC and follow it all the way to Deals Gap. This gives you somewhere between 100 and 110 miles of curvy roads that dead end right at Crossroads of Time at Deals Gap. Dont forget the GA 180/60/75 around Suches GA. US 74/64 down into Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge is fantastic. 17) If you want a little different ride Take the "Joe Brown Highway" out of Coker Creek Tn, It is just off TN68 South of Tellico Plains. If you make it you will go through Unicoi Gap and wind up in Murphy, NC.
